Southern Spin Radio Celebrates First Year On Air

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Southern Spin Radio, one of Southern Gospel music’s newest online radio stations, will be celebrating its first birthday during the month of February! January 29, 2006 will mark the station’s 1st Anniversary.
Southern Spin Radio has enjoyed an exciting first year on the air. Southern Spin Radio officially went on the air on January 29, 2005. The station is dedicated to having a strong mix of progressive, traditional, country, bluegrass, and inspirational based Southern Gospel songs in rotation.
In celebration of the station’s first birthday, Southern Spin Radio will be sponsoring a CD giveaway to all listeners. During the month of February, clues will be given multiple times a day on air describing an artist, song or album. Listeners can then go to Southern Spin Radio’s main site and enter the answer in the entry form. Each correct entry will go in a drawing at the end of the month for a CD brick of recordings from Southern Spin artists – over 30 CDs. In addition, five other names will be drawn for copies of the latest releases from country crooner Josh Turner and Lo Records artist Sheri Farmer. Listeners will get a chance to enter a correct answer at least four times, as a new clue will be given each week.
“We wanted to do something that would let the listeners know that we appreciate them sticking with us during our first year – a year that has been absolutely great!” mentioned Chris D. Unthank, program director for Southern Spin Radio. “So, we’ve come up with a unique giveaway featuring a CD brick of Southern Spin artists – everything from staples like Gold City, Dove Brothers Quartet, Paid In Full, and Hope’s Call to up and coming artists like Embrace, the Quicks, Everlasting Hope, Jonathan White, and the LeFevre Quartet.”
“Chris has a great ear for picking hit songs,” mentioned Amy Marie Unthank of SSE Group. “However, much of the success of the station has to be attributed to our programming committee who helps us decide on a lot of great music as well. We love them!”
Southern Spin Radio plays a mix of Southern Gospel but mainly plays the more progressive and country styles so prevalent among young groups today.
“We were hoping to attract new listeners to our station – those that wouldn’t give Southern Gospel radio a chance normally,” said Chris Unthank. “I believe our station has that sound that we were aiming for, and its doing a great job of attracting the kind of listener that we want.”
The station includes a programming committee which decides additions to the play list. Current members of the Advisory Committee include critics, industry veterans, artists, and fans.
Southern Spin Radio has its own main site, as well as having a portal to hear the station from SouthernGospelNews.com.
“I became introduced to Southern Spin Radio through my work,” said Nathan Newell a fan of the station. “I don’t normally like a lot of what is considered Southern Gospel, but Southern Spin Radio does a great job of keeping my attention.”
Southern Spin Radio can be found at http://southernspinradio.com. Listeners are encouraged to rate the station and its tracks.

SouthernGospelNews.com Announces Nominees for 2006 SGN Music Awards

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Deon and Susan Unthank, owners of SouthernGospelNews.com, are proud to announce the nominees for the 2006 SGN Music Awards. As in year’s past, the nominees were chosen by the staff of SouthernGospelNews.com. Starting on February 8, 2006, the fans will get a chance to vote for their favorites in each category.
"Like last year, we expanded our awards this year,” said Deon Unthank, owner of SouthernGospelNews.com. “Every year it gets harder and harder to decide on categories like Producer of the Year, so we broke this category up like we did Songwriter of the Year last year.”
Changes to the awards included a division of the Producer of the Year category. There are now two separate Producer of the Year categories: one for the producer who is part of a full-time or part-time group and another for those producers who do not travel, sing, or play for a living.
“We saw a need to divide this category like Songwriter,” remarked Unthank. “It is very apparent that the most recognizable name is the one the fans vote for, and that’s fine. However, this way we can give the award to another deserving individual who isn’t in the spotlight quite as often.”
In addition to the splitting of the Producer of the Year category, another award has been added. The inclusion of the Fan Favorite Artist of the Year was also added this year. The fans can submit their choice for Artist of the Year beginning on the 1st of February, and the Top 10 submissions will be voted on again when voting for the winners of the SGN Music Awards begins on February 7, 2006.
The SGN Music Awards also opened up the category of Radio Promoter of the Year, which honors Southern Gospel radio’s top promoters. The five nominees in this new category were chosen by the reporting stations of SouthernGospelNews.com Top 40 Weekly Chart.
As far as nominations go, the Booth Brothers led all artist nominees this year with a record setting 10 nominations, including Song of the Year (“He Saw It All”), Album of the Year (The Blind Man Saw It All), Male Group of the Year, a Male Vocalist of the Year nomination for Ronnie Booth, and a Songwriter of the Year (Artist) nomination for Jim Brady, in addition to several other nods.
Following right behind the Booth Brothers were the McRaes and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound with nine nominations apiece. Karen Peck & New River received eight nominations.
Receiving seven nominations was Gold City. Hope’s Call and the Crabb Family both earned six nominations apiece. The Ruppes earned five nods. Receiving four nominations were the Dove Brothers Quartet, Kingdom Heirs, and the Talley Trio.

Producer Jeff Collins earned the most individual nominations for his work during 2006. In addition to landing in the Producer of the Year (Professional) category, Jeff earned an additional five nominations for his production work this year – bringing his total to six. Earning five individual nominations were Annie McRae and Michael Sykes. Rebecca Isaacs Bowman, Sonya Isaacs, and Wayne Haun all received four individual nominations for songwriting and producing. Landing three individual nominations were Mark Bishop, Donna Beauvais, Phil Johnson, Daniel Riley, Mike Bowling, Bubba Smith, Heather Day, and Barry Weeks.
The Pacesetter Award is awarded to any artist, individual, or organization which has shown great strides in the industry and has raised the bar for others. This year’s nominees for the 2006 Pacesetter are the Booth Brothers, CrabbJam Tour 2005 (featuring the Crabb Family, CrossWay, and the McRaes), Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Chuck Peters (SGShowPrep & SGLive365.com), and the Talley Trio.
“This has been just an amazing year for Southern Gospel,” said Deon Unthank of SouthernGospelNews.com. “Seeing all the nominees that the staff chose this year makes me proud to be working in Southern Gospel. They are all very deserving of their nominations.”

Mercy Rain Ministries Sees Change in Personnel

LaVerne Sanders of Mercy Rain said, “As most of you know, my daughter, Angela [Causey], has been with us for some time. She has had to turn in her resignation, due to the change in her husband's job situation, etc. This came as a sad shock to us, but we know that they must do what is necessary to take care of their family. She may be moving away, and we are praying God will keep his hand on them, no matter where they go.”
Currently replacing Angela is LaVerne’s other daughter, Crystal Bailey.
“We are extremely thankful that God has just worked things out,” remarked LaVerne Sanders. “God is good! Keep Mercy Rain in your prayers that God will keep His hand on us as we go out and share the Gospel!“
Just before Angela gave her resignation, Mercy Rain Ministries welcomed Larry Summers to the group. Larry Summers, of Enterprise, Alabama, will be filling the baritone position with the group and will have his first concert with Mercy Rain on February 4, 2006.
“I am certain that Larry and his wife, Judy, will be an asset to Mercy Rain,” said LaVerne Sanders. “Larry has been singing for quite some time and was the founding member of his former group, His Lighthouse Quartet. Larry has an awesome voice that you are not soon to forget when you hear him. His harmony blend is spectacular.”
Mercy Rain Ministries is anticipating great things for the year to come.
Earlier this month, a prayer request was sent out for founding member, LaVerne Sanders. LaVerne gives us an update:
“First, I want to thank you for all your prayers, and although the danger has not completely passed, I did receive some good news recently. When all this first started before Christmas, my white cell count was up in the 22,000-23,000 range, and they had noticed spots on my lungs. After going for more blood tests and x-rays, my cell count is still quite high. It is up to 20,000 and should be around 8,500, which is what it was before. My doctor requested to see me immediately after my emergency room visit. He was extremely worried and consulted with several of his colleagues. At that point, they found NO spots on my lungs as originally thought!
I do have the issue of the white cell count and a persistent cough. So, his course of treatment will be: I am to take another round of antibiotics for 10 days. I will go in for another blood test in two weeks. If the count is still high, I will be referred to a lung specialist and a bone marrow specialist. As of now, the only problem they see with my lungs is the Chronic Lung Disease due to my accident 11 years ago. It is just the issue of the blood. I am trusting God in this, and I believe He can do all things. He has brought me this far and I know He will carry me on. I know He has all things in his control, and we should not fear or question, however this old flesh is a little worried. The doctor has assured me that we have time, in the event it would be something major. So, I am trusting God for my healing!
Keep me in your prayers, as I know you have already.”
Mercy Rain Ministries appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers during these times of transition for the group.

Benjy Gaither Shines As A Bluegrass Singing Goat In The Movie Hoodwinked Now in Theatres Nationwide
Nashville, TN 91-20-06) – Christian singer/songwriter/producer Benjy Gaither may not have the largest part in Hoodwinked, the current full-length animated re-telling of the Little Red Riding Hood saga, but he is garnering rave reviews for his voicing of Japeth, a bluegrass singing goat.Hoodwinked: The True Story of Little Red Riding Hood, was released January 13th nationwide by the Weinstein Company, headed by the Academy Award-winning Weinstein Brothers team to almost universal critical acclaim. The film, which rivaled Glory Road for top-grossing spot on its nationwide release weekend, is the first for Kanbar Animation Studios.
Gaither, a recording artist, songwriter, producer and owner/CEO of Live Bait Entertainmentâ headquartered in Alexandria, IN, voices Japeth, the goat, who, because of a spell cast by a mountain witch, is forced to sing rather than speak. He joins artists such as Glenn Close, James Belushi, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Anderson, Andy Dick, Patrick Warburton and David Ogden Stiers in the animated film.
Variety.com says of his performance, …Benjy Gaither as a singing goat steals the show every minute he’s onscreen…, while Christianity Today Movies raves, …But the most memorable of the bunch is Japeth (Benjy Gaither, son of gospel stars Bill and Gloria)… Nancy Churnin writing for the Dallas Morning News proclaims…Among the best: …Benjy Gaither’s Goat that can’t stop singing… and Michael D. Reid of the Times Colonist summizes …Among the more amusingly inspired creations are a scene-stealing cursed billy goat (Benjy Gaither) forced to sing his line… Seattle’s 97.1 FM opines …I did love one standout character, a hillybilly mountain goat (Benjy Gaither) who may or may not be under a witches’ spell from 37 years ago that forces him to sing everything he says. What a great gimmick, and what a funny character. But perhaps the greatest praise comes from Tyler Foster of comingsoon.net, who says I must resist the urge to tell you to see Hoodwinked just on the basis of a single character…he’s one of the greatest characters ever to grace an animated movie. I can’t possibly explain to you how funny he was to me without sounding completely crazy…I must point out the genius of the goat, as Benjy Gaither’s performance in Hoodwinked is the best in the film.
Hoodwinked is directed by Cory and Todd Edwards; Cory Edwards also wrote and directed the children’s video, A Wobots Christmas, which Gaither produced and which his company animated. Gaither co-wrote the music for Wobots, and he is the creator and producer of children’s videos Lil’ Gaither and the animated Gaither’s Pond Series.
Information on both Wobots and Live Bait Entertainmentâ may be obtained from http://www.gaither.com or http://www.livebaitproductions.com

Lee was invited to sing it at Bill and Gloria Gaither's 2001 Praise Gathering in Indianapolis, Indiana. The song also appears on The Bishops' album, Kentucky Bluegrass, which received a Dove Award from the Gospel Music Association.
"Death Ain't No Big Deal" was sung by recording artist Jake Hess (Elvis Presley's favorite singer) at Tammy Wynette's funeral, in accordance with her request. And "Jesus Laughing" was recorded Mark Lowry.

“We want to play great music with Godly lyrics,” stated Jason Crabb of the Crabb Family. “We hope to strip labels of genres placed on music and come together to promote the Word of Christ through song.”
Kathy Crabb added, “The Crabb Family has always blurred the lines between young and old, black and white, right and left, first and last and so on. The artists on Clear Cool, with the assistance of strong management, booking, promotion and distribution, will take Christ’s message to a broad audience hungry for the Gospel. As Southern Gospel grows to embrace an evolving music marketplace, Clear Cool’s artists will be on the cutting edge of this effort.”

Dove Award Winner Kim McLean to Lead Services at Trevecca Community Church in Nashville, TN
Trevecca Nazarene University senior Kim McLean will be leading praise and worship and delivering the message at Trevecca Community Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, TN Sunday January 29, 2006. McLean, formerly known as Kim Patton-Johnston, is a Dove Award winning songwriter having over 200 of her songs recorded by such Gospel greats as the Martins, Vestal Goodman, the Freemans, Misty Freeman and many more.“Kim’s music and her faith seem inseparable to anyone who knows her. If you met her, you might think she was shy and would know how modest she is. But when you listen to her music, you feel like you are having the most heartfelt conversation with her and that somehow you know her better for it. She has such an incredible way of putting into words what we all feel, or long to feel, for the Lord. I think that’s a huge part of her appeal,” says Suzanne Randle, a member of the Tuesday Night Prayer Group.
As a student of the Bible first and foremost, she has shared her knowledge with the Tuesday Night Prayer Group for the last four years. It was borne out of the tragedy of 9-11-01 to give people a place to pray, many of whom hadn’t stepped foot into a church in years. Faithfully, every Tuesday, she continued to provide a place for these people from all faiths and all walks of life who were drawn to her soulful, heartfelt worship songs and her poignant messages of grace. It is still alive and well today, praying every Tuesday night for our leaders, our soldiers, our world, and all others they encounter or are told about who need it. (http://www.thetuesdaynightprayergroup.com)
McLean travels all over the world with her music ministry to churches, conferences, retreats, and revivals of all sizes. She has been invited to lead praise and worship in a West African church this April that is experiencing tremendous growth. While still planning to attend, McLean Heart Ministries is continuing to seek funding for the mission. (http://www.mcleanheartministries.com)
“The Songwriter Gospels,” McLean’s latest CD being released February, 2006 is a collection of her gospel hits, as recorded by her, and some new songs as well. Her current CD, Happy Face, is doing well and continuing to get airplay with its most recent single and title cut, Happy Face. More information is available at http://www.kimmclean.com.

Christian Davis Named as Associate Director of Recruiting for SWBTS

“I know Christian as a man of integrity,” stated James Caldwell, director of recruiting and the seminary’s worship leader during thrice-weekly chapels during the semester, “I am confident that he will play a vital role in the growth of The College at Southwestern because of his experience as an ambassador and recruiter for Liberty University and his passion for the work of the ministry.”
Christian Davis is known for his bass voice and his experience with The Sounds of Liberty, Old Time Gospel Hour Quartet, and most recently his own group, Christian Brothers Quartet.
“I was involved in recruiting for Liberty University through each singing group, just in a slightly different way each time,” Davis said. “God has richly blessed the ministry of the Christian Brothers Quartet for the past three years,” Davis said. “But this new door provides a new direction for me to go in. Even though the group will disband, God is definitely not through with each individual member. We will always love each other in Christ as we seek other avenues of ministry.”
Davis, a couple of semesters shy of completing his bachelor's degree in religion said he plans to complete his degree from Fort Worth and will then pursue a master's degree from Southwestern Seminary.
Prayer Request from Mercy Rain

"Shortly before Christmas, my daughter had come home with her family and the following day, I had to be taken to the ER department here for fever, etc. Upon leaving the ER with an IV in my hand, I was told to call my doctor the next morning for orders to come back for IV antibiotics. When my doctor looked at some x-rays and test results, I was sent immediately to the hospital to be admitted. Seems my white cell count was extremely elevated. I was there 4 days and went through tons of tests. The surmised that I had pneumonia. After releasing me from the hospital, I began feeling better and was actually able to cook Christmas dinner. However I have been having low grade fevers ever since.
I returned for a follow up visit, had to get blood drawn. Apparently, my white cell count is high again. At this point, I don't know what they will do. I cannot seem to gain my strength and keep having fevers, etc. I really don't know what I am facing. Since I live without a spleen, infection is very common for me, however I think this is the first time they have not been able to knock it out fast. So, while I am very confident God has his hand on me, I am very worried about the outcome.
God Bless,
LaVerne

Good News for the Crist Family – Colby Starkel Returns Home

Colby’s Uncle Rich Crist explains, “Colby can read, comprehend, do math, recognize and remember things just like he could before the accident. Colby will still need physical therapy to regain use of his right hand, although he can now move his arm, the fine motor skills need to be rebuilt. He will also need to continue speech therapy to relearn how to make sounds. The doctors tell us it is just a matter of work and time before he regains these skills. God has lifted us through a major tragedy, and to His glory…Colby not only survived, but is being healed to the same vibrant 9 year old boy that he was before the accident!”
Rich continues, “We know that God has a plan for each and every one of our lives…never has this been as obvious as it is now. Our family and ministry are committed more than ever to showing love to others and sharing the good news of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ministry supporters have offered to help care for Colby if needed to ensure that we could continue to get out in front of people and share our hearts and lives in Christ. Fortunately, that has not been necessary but we have been touched by their commitment…and our commitment to them is to keep our eyes on the Lord and continue to share Him with others through song.”

Mine Tragedy Hits ECC Family

Dave Wilcox, Senior Vice President of the Eddie Crook Company states, "I have been consumed by this story from the first moment that I heard it because of my family's history. While channel surfing last night between Fox and CNN I heard the familiar voice of Randy. It was like I had been hit in the stomach with all the emotion from 1974 again. I feel awful for Randy and his family. However I was so proud of the way Randy conducted himself on air. He was a class act and great representative of the ECC and G
