Some Good Things About Southern Gospel Radio

While there are plenty of things in any area of life that we can find negative in, sometimes we must make ourselves look for the many good things that are happening. I thought that I would look for some of the good things that Southern Gospel Radio is doing and even some way to improve on that good. First of all, Southern Gospel Radio is in my opinion playing the very best music in the world. It is the very best for several reasons. First is the message. Of all the important things in life to say or sing about, the Gospel is certainly the most important one I can think of. For the most part, Southern Gospel Radio is playing very solid songs with the Gospel message that is inspiring and uplifting to their audience. Secondly, the musical stylings of Southern Gospel Music are distinct. At times there is a hint of Country or maybe some Blues or maybe even some Pop. For sure you hear a little touch of traditional Black Gospel in there, but in general Southern Gospel Radio is playing a style of music that is different from anything else being aired. With such a distinctive sound, it?s not one that we tend to ?boogie? or dance to, so the approach of Southern Gospel Radio is going to be a little different. No doubt it is entertaining. Many a long trip has been made bearable by the entertaining sound coming from that low Bass singer sliding down, or that high Tenor singer screeching out a high note. Then there have been times all alone in my care when the weight of the world seemed to be on my shoulders, that a soul stirring ballad came on and I was blessed to the heart of my soul. Because of that, I can say that Southern Gospel Radio has been a form of Ministry to me also. Now are there some areas that need improvement? There sure are. One of the big ways is in Professionalism of our DJs. I understand that many of the radio stations just do not have the money to hire first rate ?professional? DJs. Because of this many of the DJs are minimum paid people who are doing the best that they can, or even many of the station managers and owners are having to put on many different caps just to keep the station going. So, it?s either use the DJs that they can afford, even though it may not be as professional as it should be, or close the doors and have no Southern Gospel Radio at all. So much of what is happening, or not happening in SG Radio is because of the money that just doesn?t seem to be there. I must say that there does seem to be an answer though. I see some of the bigger SG Radio stations making a good profit, and I see many of the Contemporary Stations making a good profit. So I have to ask myself this question. Why do some of the stations stay above board making good profit while many of the smaller ones are biting the dust. I have come to the opinion that much of it is education. While this may not be the total answer, I think that at least part of the answer can be found in attending educational seminars. One of the best that I have seen is provided by the GMA on Super Tuesday, this year on April 8, 2003. Having been to several of these seminars, I can attest that some very valuable information is given out at this event. The speakers at the GMA seminars are the same speakers that the secular stations pay thousands of dollars to hear. I want to stress that they are top notch speakers with a wealth of information on how to make your Southern Gospel Station go from barely getting by to be a profitable institution that can afford to upgrade the quality of broadcasting, which will only make Southern Gospel and Southern Gospel Radio more popular. This seminar is not just for DJs, however it is for the station managers and owners, where they can find this wealth of information on how to raise revenues and increase sales in order to make his station better. For only $99.00 any SG Station will get a full day of great ideas for improving your station, which includes lunch. The first 25 stations to register will receive a gift pack valued at $100.00, including one night hotel accommodations. Every registrant will be eligible for some giveaways including a Dell Computer, and a handsome BarBQ Grill. Is this a commercial? Well, no. This is a sincere encouragement for Southern Gospel Radio to better itself and expand the entertainment and Ministry that they are doing today, and to do it more effectively. I?m going to be there, and I hope to see many of the Southern Gospel Radio people there also. For more information see: www.southerngospelnews.com/issues/supertuesday.php

You are correct about a lot of good things about radio. I would love to see southern gospel stations compete with country stations in both money and the size audience that they can command. after all, our message is the best one ever.

This was way too kind to southern gospel radio. I hear a lot of less than professional singers being played. It's like they'll play anything for the money.

Our suggestion is that you encourage your radio personnel in the area they live in to attend the Super Tuesday Southern Gospel Radio seminar this year. You can read about it here:

I'm having trouble finding a station in this area. Can you help me? I really think we need more southern gospel stations all over the US. In WV I listen to 107.9 Huntington and another one that I can't recall the location. I love gospel music, southern gospel and bluegrass. Thanks.

Actually, I don't think Southern Gospel radio overall is doing well because it is playing the wrong music. The one comment is correct, they will play anyone who puts out a CD if they are on the charts or are promoting themselves to the stations.
The charts are based on listener requests. As a radio pro of 40 plus years I can tell you that one of the first things I learned was that request do not tell you what the audience wants. Why do you thing secular radio puts so much money into audience research instead of depending on requests.
We no longer have the original form of Southern Gospel. We have so many different styles of music listed under SG that it means little.
Thank God for the Dove Brothers. They are doing music right, they are innovative and they have never had a top song but in four years they have moved to the top. This is the kind of music most fans want. Quality singing with a flair of showmanship in the appropriate place. McCray Dove is the visionary of this era like Hovie, James, Glen and George were in their eras.
If you are a radio station watch what the Dove Brothers do and you'll start heading in the right direction. And get all the screamers and untrained singers off your station. And care about your music when you present it (announce it).

It's sorta funny how one who is linked to allquartetsradio.com would think the Dove Brothers are what most fans want! I'm sensing that you believe only QUARTET music is the "right" southern gospel music...surely you don't think that is true.

I could name a few others who are more of a visionary in this industry then McCray Dove. Wouldn't never having a top song in four years contradict him being a visionary?

McCray is not a visionary, just someone who copies the old stuff, without even giving it any new sort of arrangement. I have a hard time understanding the words when the Dove Bros sing. Now there is some great singing going on with groups like Greater Vision, Gold City and the Hoppers. Oh and I almost forgot the Crabb Family. Those groups are visionary
