Deon Unthank

How Strong Is Love I’ve just returned from seeing "The Passion of the Christ", the movie by Mel Gibson that is making such a stir in our society today. There have been many reviews and thoughts given about the movie, so I’m not going to give you a review of the movie. But, there were a couple of things that really jumped out at me, so I thought that I would share those thoughts with you. I believe that the things that happened to Jesus in the movie were pretty close to as it really happened. If anything I think that He may have gone through even more than Mel’s mind could imagine. What really got me to thinking was the scourging that He took. I counted the stripes as they were put on his back, and they were close to being scripturally correct. I saw what looked like the results of this kind of beating. This of course is in addition to the beatings that He had gone through before He ever got to the scourge's whips. If the actual beatings were anywhere close to what was shown on the big screen, I have to wonder how any man could get up from that and walk back to face His accusers. From there He goes to the crown of thorns which the Bible tells us was beaten onto His head. Add to this the fact that He was already emotionally and physically drained from the ordeal in the Garden where He agonized until His sweat became as great drops of blood, and the severity of those beatings become even more dramatic. Then I watched as this man who had suffered unbearable pain stood up and placed an old wooden cross across the flesh-torn wounds on His back, and I wondered, what in the world keeps someone going after all that? I cannot even imagine being able to get up and have a robe put on top of those wounds, but He carried a cross. I just couldn’t stop thinking about what gave Him the ability to continue on with all that pain and agony. Was He a superman at that point? Did the God in Him take over at that point? I thought and thought about this issue, and could only come to one conclusion. We all know that there is no such thing a superman, and if He had taken on the manifestation of God to go through that, then He wouldn’t have been true to going through all this as "man" as the Bible plainly states. There is only one reason that a man could go through what He did and still have the driving force to continue. It had to be something so important that He knew He had to complete what He must go through. What was it that was so important to Him that He could muster the strength to overcome such pain? It is all encompassed in one word. LOVE! His love for you and me is what drove Him to continue even in the face of more pain than a man can possibly stand. What kind of love is there that causes a man to go through so much for men and women who are vile sinners, because that’s what we were when He went through all this agony. We were not nice, clean, pretty, Christians. We were nasty, dirty, sinners who could not have cared less what this man was doing. Oh, what a LOVE that drove Him to go through all that torment. I’m afraid that it is more Love than I have to give back, but I’m so glad that He had that much love for me. Another thing that struck me as I watched was the fact that in Mel’s mind, as he put it on the film, Jesus crawled on that cross Himself, and that follows scripture as He freely and willingly gave Himself for us. What a dynamic picture I have in my mind that the Son of God crawled over on that cross Himself. They didn’t pick Him up and put Him on it, but HE PLACED HIMSELF ON THAT CROSS FOR ME. It really brought home the fact that His life was not taken, it was GIVEN. Wow, just think of that, a love that is so determined that it would cause a man to go through such terrible pain, misery, and agony. I think that I have to go now and praise Him for such a great LOVE as he has given me.
