In case you have not noticed, we have gradually moved into the “Hybrid Age.” We have witnessed this phenomenon where two animals or plants from two different species are mixed in order to produce an offspring of a hybrid (Latin: “a crossbred animal”) nature. Before the days of being politically correct, we called them “mongrels,” “mutations” or “half-breeds.” Dogs were among the first evidence of a mongrel offspring from mixed parentage.

Hybrids are organisms that are the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock, especially offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties, breeds or species. A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. Boysenberries are the hybrid offspring of a blackberry, loganberry, and raspberry. The delicious treats made from this new species of berries are synonymous with Knott’s Berry Farm in California.

Automobile makers and golfers have also seen the introduction of hybrid technology make an impact on their products. The Hybrid car looks like a conventional automobile until you look under the hood. The large engine with a small battery-power capacity has been replaced with a small engine and a “ginormous” battery capacity. Fairway woods have now been mutated with mid-irons to offer the golfer a better option for getting higher, longer shots and increase his chances of hitting the greens in regulation. Even the Pros are now carrying them in their arsenal of clubs.

While many in the scientific arena herald the accomplishments of genetic manipulation, we see a very different view depicted in Scripture. Mules and boysenberries may have their place in the marketplace of the world, but “the world” has no place in the Church. God’s continuous message throughout the Sacred Scriptures was for His people to stay separated, distinct and unpolluted from the world.

The Jews were dogmatic about their natural bloodline remaining pure. Sadly, they missed the bigger picture of remaining pure in their spiritual bloodline. Their history is filled with examples of their unbridled fascination with idols. They repeatedly refused to obey God’s prohibition against worshipping false gods. Their disobedience led to a mongrel or hybrid religion of paganism where they celebrated ritual at the sacrifice of their relationship with God.

In the early days of the Israelite nation, God established Himself as their King. However, the people wanted to be like other nations. They wanted to be governed by a human king, not a Theocracy. They badgered God into allowing them to mutate with the heathen nations around them so they would bear a resemblance to the kingdoms of this world. God granted their wish and a Hybrid nation was formed: worshipping God, serving Saul. The “mongrel” God gave them was head and shoulders above the other mongrels: but it was still a mongrel! God’s directive was, “you cannot mix and mingle with the world and stay pure.” They ignored Him.

This same issue of government would arise numerous times throughout biblical history. We even see it mentioned in the New Testament as references to the Nicolaitans of Ephesus and the Church of Laodicea.

Revelation 2:6 states, “But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” Nicolaitans were noted for their papal power or government from the pulpit. This government by the clergy often was rife with abuse and domineering conduct. Jesus told the Church at Ephesus that He hated this conduct. Nicolaitans were “controllers of the people.”

Later, in Christ’s message to the Church at Laodicea recorded in Revelation 3:16, He states, “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Laodicea is a Greek word meaning, “people governed or controlled.” This means, “controlled by the people.” God was speaking about the weakness of a democracy when it turns to tepid the fervor of the people.

Jesus saw that power in the PULPIT was just as dangerous and undesirable as power in the PEW. To this democratic, people-controlled Church He said, “You make me vomit with your lukewarm attitudes and decisions.” God has never wanted to share the governing of His people with anyone by creating a Hybrid government. He does not want His Church to be governed from the pulpit or the pew but by the King of Kings from His eternal Throne.

The New Testament even describes the hatred that existed in Israel toward the inhabitants of Samaria. Samaritans were “half-breeds” who were despised by the Jews. They hated these mongrel and hybrid neighbors so much that they even refused to travel in their country. Jews would extend their trip by going around Samaria and through Decapolis (lit. “Ten cities”) just to avoid contact and contamination from the despised mutants.

The Holy Spirit cautioned New Testament believers about being unequally yoked with unbelievers, about trying to mix darkness with light, good with evil, Christ with Belial, faith with doubt, right with wrong, hot with cold, God with mammon and obedience with disobedience. Christ’s constant warning was for His people to remain pure and undiluted from the world. No hybrids are wanted or needed in the Church of Jesus Christ.

Paul cautioned the Church in Ephesians 5:27 that Christ wanted to “present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish”. That is pretty emphatic! God is NOT in the Hybrid business. The message is simple: The Church WILL be pure, or it will be left behind. There is no such mongrel in God’s Kingdom as a Hybrid Saint. From Christ’s perspective you are either a Saint or you are a sinner. The two cannot be mixed.

It sounds so humble to say that we are sinners saved by grace. However, if we are saved, then we are NO LONGER SINNERS. We may sin occasionally, but we have been made Saints by the blood of Christ (Col.1:12). We are not half-breeds or mutants. We CANNOT be both Saint and Sinner. God does not make Hybrids; you are either one or the other. God does not create mules. Saints may sin, but sinners are not saints.

When the first century Jewish converts wanted to restore some of the Mosaic ordinances to their newfound Christian faith, God summarily condemned their practice. The book of Hebrews is all about them trying to mutate their Christian faith. In fact, their attempt to mix Christianity and Judaism is THE ONLY SIN referred to in this book.

God stated emphatically that genetic engineering would NEVER happen in the Kingdom of Heaven because the blood of bulls and goats can never be mixed with the Blood of Christ in order to affect salvation. God does not countenance mongrel blood as a way of being born into His family. There is no Hybrid Calvary where the blood of an animal and the blood of Jesus mingle.

Notice what is stated in Hebrews 10:26, “For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins...” The Scripture is very plain: if you say that the blood of Jesus is not sufficient to save you from your sins, and it must be aided by the blood of an animal or some other ritual, then there is nothing left that has the power to save you. If Christ’s blood is not powerful enough, then diluting it with ceremony and ritual only lessens its power to be your only effective saving agent.

This desire to create a hybrid blood was the sin of the Hebrew converts in the first century of Christianity. God forbade a reversion to Judaism for these new converts. If Judaism could have saved them, then they did not need Christ. If a bull’s blood was sufficient to save, then Calvary was a waste of time and effort on the part of the Redeemer.

God has consistently resisted every attempt to dilute the purity of His people. He cast the devil and his angelic defectors out of heaven, He moved Abraham out of the Ur of the Chaldees, He got Lot out of Sodom, He led the Israelites out of Egypt, He chased the giants out of Canaan, and He will take His bride out of this world. Remember, we will be pure or we will be left.

God’s people must be holy, even as He is holy. We must not “intermarry” with the things of this world and force God to adopt a hybrid into His family. There are NO MULES, MONGRELS nor HYBRIDS in God’s family. All of God’s children are “thoroughbreds”! Let’s keep it that way by not sleeping with the enemy.
