Toler Brothers - He Still Speaks

No, the name may not ring a bell for most, but I knew who they were the first time I ran across their music; at least one of them anyway. Three brothers, Stan, Terry and Mark have a rich history in church and gospel music as they grew up in church and cut their teeth on the music of such people as the Happy Goodman Family, Bill Gaither Trio, and others. Terry grew to be a fine songwriter with some of the greatest names recording his works including the Happy Goodman Family, Rusty Goodman, LordSong, Talleys, Ponder, Sykes & Wright, Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters, Singing Americans and the list goes on.

As a tribute to their heritage and strong desire to leave a legacy for their children and their children's children, the brothers recorded a special project filled with songs written by Terry, as well as songs that hold a special place in the hearts of all three brothers.

Featuring classic tunes like "HE TOUCHED ME" and "WHAT A LOVELY NAME" (which features a guest appearance by Tanya Goodman-Sykes), they also included some of Terry's best known songs such as "ONLY CHILD" (which happens to be one of my all-time favorites), "THE SHADOW OF THE STEEPLE", "THE PRODIGAL SON" and "HE STILL SPEAKS" as well some great new tunes like "STARTING NOW", "YOU CAN DEPEND ON JESUS" (great story behind this song), "SWEET COMMUNION" and others.

Though no one in the group is what I would label as a tremendous singer, there is a certain sincerity and humbleness about their singing that moves me. From a musical standpoint, they stay well within their vocal capabilities and they don't venture far from their comfort zone. The tracks are extremely well done, and fit them very well. Michael Sykes did a tremendous job producing this effort and did a wonderful job bringing out the best in the brothers.

One thing to note, the brothers also released a book coinciding with this musical effort, and I would suggest to anyone considering getting the CD, to go ahead and get the book as well. The book offers some tremendous insight into the reasons behind why certain songs were recorded, insight into their heritage and, quite frankly, it's just really enjoyable to read. Much like the recording, I think most people will enjoy it and also find it very easy to relate to.
