Cross 4 Crowns is the latest of a slew of up and coming artists that Crossroads Music has picked up. They join the likes of The Dills, Voices Won, Shiloh, and others destined to make it big in Southern Gospel music. This Macot, Tennessee based group utilized the help of Southern Gospel juggernaut Arthur Rice to produce their latest recording - Turning Point.

Cross 4 Crowns pulls off traditional quartet singing just as well as the big dogs. In fact, the group most resembles The Kingdom Heirs - more than likely due to the production work of Arthur Rice. The album kicks off with two very traditional numbers right off the bat - "I Will Trade the Old Cross For a Crown" and "Things That I'm Seeing". Turning Point's first big ballad comes in the form of Rodney Griffin penned "Greater Miracle", and Dee Gaskin's "I'm Going There" features a radio-friendly melody and strong vocal work from the group. "I'll See You Home" sounds not unlike something the Gaither Vocal Band or Booth Brothers would record. "Take a Little Look" showcases a nice bluegrass accompaniment - while "Celebrating Resurrection Morning" is another cut bound for the radio with its traditional quartet arrangement. Other writers like Marty Funderburk, Squire Parsons, Mark Mathes, Ricky Atkinson, Ann Ballard, and others make showings on the disc as well.

Overall, Turning Point shows that Cross 4 Crowns has all the makings of Southern Gospel's next great quartet. They have a great blend, and with a tenor as strong as Dallas Rogers, they are definitely bound to go places. Arthur Rice proves to be a fantastic producer, but a bigger budget would definitely take these guys to the next level. Working in live strings and horns as opposed to a canned orchestra will only heighten the listening experience. Also - a little more musical diversity would help the album maintain a more unique sound. Turning Point should do very well for the group and will definitely appeal to fans of traditional quartet music. Keep yours eyes peeled for Cross 4 Crowns - they'll be around for a long time.

Song List:

I Will Trade the Old Cross For a Crown
Things That I'm Seeing
Greater Miracle
I'm Going There
He'll Never Forsake
I'll See You Home
Tell Me Who
Whenever, Wherever, Whatever
Take a Little Look
Celebrating Resurrection Morning
Hallelujah For the Cross

It seems that the point of this review is to say that this group is great because they, in fact, sound like everybody else.

Oh well, best of luck to Cross 4 Crowns.

Deon Unthank's avatar Gee, Max, you see something negative of what the reviewer was saying and I see versatility. He didn't say that their sound was like anybody else, but that their style was so versatile that they that they could have a sound like several other groups, and that to me is a good thing.

Chris D. Unthank's avatar Actually - mentioning that they sound like other artists is to assist the readers as to whether or not they would like this particular artist.

Cross 4 Crowns is an excellent group. The CD comes highly recommended.
