The Southern Gospel Music Association has bestowed its highest commendation on Paul Heil's "The Gospel Greats" syndicated radio program.

An audience of nearly 1,600 saw the SGMA present its 2004 James D. Vaughan Impact Award during the organization's annual Hall of Fame induction ceremonies October 14, 2004, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, at Dollywood's Celebrity Theater.

The SGMA bestows the award each year on "a person or entity that has had a great impact on the Southern Gospel music industry for an extended period of time." The previous winners were the late J. D. Sumner, the Cathedral Quartet, the late James Blackwood, the Gaither Video Series and legendary concert promoter J. G. Whitfield.

"The Gospel Greats" program, which airs weekly on about 200 radio stations throughout the United States and in Canada and is heard on the internet worldwide, will celebrate its 25th anniversary in February, 2005.

In introducing the award, Gerald Wolfe of Greater Vision said, "The winner of this year's James D. Vaughan Impact Award is a man who touches the lives of literally countless thousands of people every week with his syndicated radio program that reaches all over the United States and even around the
world."

Paul Heil, completely surprised by the honor, told the audience, "The greatest thing about this is that we get a chance every week to share the Gospel with people all over the country, over 200 radio stations in the United States and Canada, around the world on the internet, and we praise God for the opportunity. We pray all the time that we are doing the job that we are supposed to be doing to share the Gospel." And Heil, who produces and hosts the program, was applauded when he noted that Southern
Gospel music is a very good way to spread the Gospel message.

Event emcee Dr. Jerry Goff called Paul "a tremendous ambassador for Southern Gospel music." And he added, "Paul, we're proud of what you're doing for our music."

The Impact Award is named for James D. Vaughan (1864-1941), a Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, music instructor and publisher often referred to as the founder, more than a century ago, of what has come to be known as Southern Gospel music.

This is the second major award this year for "The Gospel Greats" program. Readers of Southern Gospel music's largest periodical, Singing News magazine, earlier this year voted it their "Favorite Syndicated Radio Program." That award was presented during the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in September.

"The Gospel Greats," with studios and offices in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a weekly two-hour program featuring currently-popular Southern Gospel music, artist interviews, music news and numerous other special features related to the music. The program has been especially popular on Southern Gospel and country-formatted radio stations.

I worked as a country D.J. several years ago and had to work on Sunday afternoons. Gospel Greats allowed me to worship at work. I was always ministered to by the music and the message of Paul.
