The Business of Music for the Christian and Gospel Industry
Written by Alvin Williams and Jay King
This is a unique, yet very interesting, book. It’s short, so it’s an easy read, but it is full of valuable information for Gospel artists. This book was written for artists who are thinking of starting an Independent Label. Since at least 75% of all Southern Gospel groups are independent recordings, this book contains a wealth of knowledge that will help if you are pursuing a recording.
To make one thing clear, if you are paying for your recording, regardless of what the name on the CD says, you have an independent recording. If the record company pays for the project, then you are not an independent.
This book will walk you step by step through your independent recording. It covers all the licenses and legal avenues that you need to be aware of. It informs you of all the royalties and fees that you must pay when recording independently. There are chapters covering marketing and distribution, which are two very neglected areas in Southern Gospel. The sample forms and contracts alone are worth the $18.95 price of the book.
I can highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to do an independent recording.
