The Oaks Pay Tribute to National Anthem Project with Performance Alongside The Met Singers
BRENTWOOD, Tenn.—April 19, 2005—Spring Hill Music Recording Artists The Oak Ridge Boys performed and signed autographs at Borders Books and Music in Brentwood on Friday night, April 15th, in support of their recent book An American Journey (New Leaf Press) and current recording The Journey.
The group promoted the National Anthem Project (NAP), a three-year, nationwide campaign to promote the re-teaching and singing of our country’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The NAP is an effort in conjunction with the MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the world’s largest arts education organization and the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Its membership of more than 120,000 people represents all levels of teaching from preschool to graduate school.
The Oak Ridge Boys were joined by members of The Met Singers, a choir comprised of public, home and private school children from Davidson County and the surrounding area. The 75-plus-member youth choral group includes students attending schools such as Maxwell Elementary, Cora Howe Elementary, East Literature Magnet, Hunter's Lane High School, Meigs Magnet, Nashville School of the Arts, Antioch High School and others.
Under the direction of Margaret Campbelle-Holman, The Met Singers have performed regularly with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and collaboratively worked with the late Maestro, Kenneth Schermerhorn. Other past performances by the choir include the Nashville Symphony's annual Let Freedom Sing concert honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and most recently a performance at the Country Music Hall of Fame for a national audience on CBS News’ "The Morning Show."
The Oak Ridge Boys and The Met Singers led the crowd in an acapella rendition of the national anthem. Seven teachers from the Nashville area, all of whom are members of the MENC, were recognized and given special gift packages in conjunction with the NAP.
The in-store performance and signing that followed were part of Educator Savings Days, held Friday, April 15th through Sunday, April 17th. This special savings event, organized by Borders Books and Music and Waldenbooks, was held in stores nationwide, honoring local educators for their hard work and dedication. Each store offered educators a 25% discount on regularly priced items, including items not intended for classroom use. In addition, all educators received a 25% discount on cafe food and beverage items during the weekend.
The Oak Ridge Boys performed their current country single (“Someplace Green”) and other music from The Journey and highlighted An American Journey, written by tenor Joe Bonsall. The book captures the 30-year history of The Oak Ridge Boys in the mainstream of country music and includes many photographs of the group over the years.
The Journey recording is distributed by WEA/Word Entertainment and is available in stores everywhere. The Oak Ridge Boys are booked by The William Morris Agency and are managed by The Jim Halsey Company.
