One Prayer At A Time was released in 2002 by Capstone Quartet. Sporting a generic cover photo of a sunset over a lake, this CD was recorded at the Homeland Studios in Franklin, TN. Jason Webb‘s piano work on this CD sets a higher standard than you’ll hear on most mid-level Southern Gospel record labels. Mike Douchette adds his talents on various guitars and harmonica.
The ten tunes on One Prayer At A Time are well written, drawing from the likes of McCray Dove, John Mathis, John Darin Rowsey, and Savannah Foust. I had heard Dove’s “On That Heavenly Ride” recorded previously (2001) by the Melody Masters Quartet. Capstone Quartet opted for a more laid back approach to that tune, slowing the speed and employng a less elaborate accompaniment. In contrast, Faust’s “Angels Will Guide Me” gets a medium tempo gospel style going with some nice organ work coloring the background. Rowsey’s “Garment Of Praise” has a toe tapping, Nashville guitar picking treatment. Other standout tunes include “Sing, Sing, Sing” written by Shane Dunlap and Jake Sammons’ “Walking To Jerusalem.”
Vocals on this CD are right around average, in my opinion. Capstone Quartet doesn’t really turn your head when it comes to range and expression, but at least they stay within their abilities. One vocalist has a husky quality in his voice that diminishes the vocal blend of the group. The lead singer has a good clear tone and some very good expression when he’s featured, though. This CD is pretty good, all things considered. Very good song selection, detailed attention to music track production, and adequate vocal performances add up to an overall rating that’s above average for One Prayer At A Time.
