Covenant Quartet - Covenant Classics
Label: Independent
Producer: Greg Gabel
Covenant Quartet is a wonderful group of men from Waynesville, MO. They have made a commitment to sing classic quartet songs the old fashioned way. Their latest project, Covenant Classics delivers.
The old Oak Ridge Boys song, “Jesus Walked All The Way” is a nice kick off for the c.d. Tenor, Mike Freeman, does a fine job on the great Mosie Lister song, “While Ages Roll”. “John, the Revelator” is done is traditional style and features lead singer, Greg Gabel.
“Angels Watchin” a catchy spiritual is a fun song and features Mike and baritone singer, Neil Walters. “When the Master Walks By” is a nice three quarter time song and is sang well by Greg Gabel. “Lay it Down” is a great hand clapper and features bass singer, Bill Anderson.
“New Born Feeling” is a wonderful old song written by Leroy Abernathy. The group does some nice harmony moves on this one. “Jesus Hold My Hand” is an instrumental featuring pianist, Mike James. He plays the convention style piano and does it very well. They follow this up with another great old song, “Palms of Victory”.
Bill Anderson takes the lead on “Roll Away Troubled River”. Bill drops it down in the basement on this one.
Mike Freeman sings “God on the Mountain”. Mike sings with a lot of feeling. They close the project out with the great old song “We’ll Soon Be Done”.
This project is self produced in a home studio. It does not have the flash of some of the big studio recordings that are so prominent today but it is sometimes nice just to hear four vocals with limited background accompaniment. With that being said, I really enjoyed this project from Covenant Quartet. I’m glad that there are still a few groups out there that are keeping the nostalgic old Southern Gospel style alive and well.
