CRIST FAMILY – “Every Step”
Producer: Jeff Collins
Label: Crossroads Music
Website: http://www.cristfamilymusic.com

The Crist Family could really come out to become one of the most versatile singers in Southern Gospel Music. They have a very diverse sound, with Tami Crist-Starkel as the main vocalist, with her brother, Rich next in line as featured vocalist. This release marks their second mainline release to the industry, and is definitely a step in the right direction.

The soulful, “I’VE COME HERE TO TELL YOU” penned by Daryl Williams and Kirk Talley gets things started off on the right foot before the tempo slows down a bit for the warm sound of, “WHEN THE SON FINALLY SETS”, penned by Chris White.

Lead singer, Tami pens the soul-funk, brass tinged “POWER IN THE LORD” and she performs the song extremely well. This would be a really cool single and is a big highlight of the recording, as is country feel of “IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS”, penned and sung by Rich Crist.

In typical Southern Gospel flare, the family breaks into the uptempo, “EVEN SO, COME LORD JESUS”, penned by a very good up and coming writer, Matt Rankin of the Soul’d Out Quartet (the song begs for an encore, but none is given). Things then slow down for the emotionally tinged title song, “EVERY STEP” penned by veteran writer, Rebecca Peck. Tammy does a superb job singing this great song. This is the strongest song on the recording and is probably my favorite.

Rich lends another tune from his pen entitled, “ALONG FOR THE RIDE” (which is probably the weakest song on the recording) before the family breaks into a Sandy Knight penned tune, “SEEKING SHELTER”, which fits the Crist Family like a glove.

Ann Ballard penned the acoustically flavored, “FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER” before moving on to something that has a certain “Talleys” feel to it entitled, “ALL I EVER NEED”. An accapella rendition of the Dottie Rambo classic, “HE LOOKED BEYOND MY FAULTS” rounds out the recording.

This is an all-around great recording. They run the gamut between straight-ahead Southern Gospel, Country Gospel, Inspirational, Progressive and even a bit of soul. They have a good blend, and an excellent selection of songs. While basically the same two people sing all the feature parts, there is actually quite a bit of variety on this recording. This is definitely a step in the right direction for this family and I look forward to that trend continuing with their next release.

Personal Favs: I’VE COME HERE TO TELL YOU; POWER IN THE LORD; IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS; EVERY STEP; SEEKING SHELTER; FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER

Good CD! I picked this one up at NQC. My favorite tracks are "When The Son Finally Sets", "Every Step", and "He Looked Beyond My Fault".
