2002/SpringHill Music Group

One of the most anticipated releases for 2002 is finally here, and it was well worth waiting for!  Consisting of tenor Casey Cappleman, lead singer Marty Hurt, Paul Smith on baritone and Chris Weaver holding down the bass, CrossWay has put out a recording with an excellent blend of uptempo songs, slow songs, ballads and medium tempo songs.  There is not a boring moment found on “Walk on Water Kind of Day.”  This is the type of recording that people will be talking about for years to come. This is what exciting, unique and innovative quartet singing is all about!

The fast paced “WALK ON WATER KIND OF DAY” starts things off and you are almost dancing by the time the song is over and you really do feel like walking on the water!  This is quartet singing at its finest.  I love the concept behind the song, and I expect this song will do extremely well for the group.  As a side note, I can easily see this song being one the Statesmen would have sang back in the 60’s, it sounds so much like them.

The lighthearted “SO MUCH SINGING TO DO” will no doubt become a favorite on the recording.  This song sounds reminiscent to that of the folk songs from the flower child generation of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.  The song kind of plays on the idea that there is so much singing to do for the Lord, and so many people to reach, and so little time to do it.  There really is a solid message in this song.

The anthem “ALL THE KING’S MEN” features each member of CrossWay, and challenges us to be faithful to the call that has been given to live righteous and holy and fight this good fight, for God Himself “is depending on all the King’s men!”

The Cajun flavored “GREAT AND AWESOME GOD” is next and the tune will stick with you, and you’ll be singing it long after the music stops.  Written by Greg Day, this upbeat song reminds us what a great and awesome God we serve “…no greater power on earth can be found, His love endures through all generations, calling to the lost to receive salvation, upon His name we call, He’s a great and awesome God!”

Starting out with a slower pace “WALKIN’ IN THE WILL” ends up picking up the pace and becomes a bouncy song reminding us there is “no better place to be than to be walkin’ in the will of the Lord.”

The reflective “THE TIME THAT REMAINS” reminds us that “every minute, every hour, every day” is precious and that all the time we have left to reach lost souls and make a difference in peoples lives is the time we have left remaining on this earth. “LOOK UP” follows and focuses on the thought that we need to keep our eyes on Jesus, and just when things start looking down…“look up!”

The creative “WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE AND HOW” written by Aaron Wilburn and Jeff Silvey is almost a throw back to the 1970’s musically.  This song is cleverly written and superbly performed.

The tender “LOOKING AT YOU” will surely bring a lump in your throat and a tear in your eyes.  As a tribute to Paul Smith’s father who died in December 2001, there is no greater testimony than for people to learn about Jesus looking through the way we live our lives.  What a wonderful legacy to leave behind!

After September 11, there has been an influx of patriotic songs.  Some new, and some revived.  This new song, “SEE OLD GLORY FLY”, written in part by super songwriter Joel Lindsey after losing a friend in that terrible tragedy in New York City, is one of the best and most poignant songs written pertaining to that infamous day.

The last song, “PRAYIN’ FOR DELIVERANCE” is a fun song to listen to and you’ll be humming this one all day as well.  This is a great upbeat close to the CD.

Not only is this a superb sounding recording, but also the cover graphics are simply remarkable.  The front cover alone screams “BUY ME!”  But seriously, I could not find any weak spots worth mentioning on this recording.  If CrossWay keeps this up, they are going to be the next Gold City, Kingsmen or Cathedrals.  I would not be afraid to bet that within the next 5 years, they will be Quartet of the Year.  Just wait and see!
