Who knew Big Band could be so much fun? When I first “discovered” these guys about 3 years ago, I loved what I heard. They were fresh and exciting and I never realized until that moment, just how much I would ever enjoy such a genre. I have thought many times since that moment, that they need to get a live recording to show everybody how great they really are. Well, the wait is now over as Denver & The Mile High Orchestra have released this new DVD/CD combo that is purely electrifying as they demonstrate what a real LIVE performance is all about! Recorded before an enthusiastic crowd at Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee, this recording is full of theatrics, choreography and charisma, as well as some of the most robust and exciting musical arrangements you’d ever allow your ears to hear. Simply put, these guys can tote the mail with anybody in any musical field and they are turning heads everywhere they go.

Full of energy, spunk and spontaneity, "ONE TIME SHOW", "THE REAL DEAL" and "NEVER GONNA SAY" starts things off and they run nearly non-stop as Denver and the gang capture your attention from the get-go before slowing things down just a mite, for the jazzy number, "ACT THE SCAT".

"IT IS WELL" features a cool, updated arrangement (and features dueling saxes as well) before moving on to the fun, blues infested sound of, "CAN’T GET ENOUGH". The tempo finally begins to tone down a bit as Denver performs a medley of some of his songs aptly titled, "ACOUSTIC MEDLEY" and features the songs "Unwind", "Confrontations", "Live Your Love" and "All to You" in a more toned down, acoustical fashion.

Slipping into a more Praise & Worship vein, Denver and the gang churns out the songs "ALL HAIL THE POWER", "GLORY FOREVER" and a brand new tune titled, "VOICE OF GOD" before moving on to the song, "STAND", which is what I consider to be Denver’s signature tune. This is a power ballad that gets royal treatment, and is the highlight of the recording for me. All the fun, excitement and entertainment boils down to the pertinent question posed in the climax of this song about Stephen…"Will you give Jesus your soul? Will you stand?"

Getting back in the groove, the concert closes out with "GET DOWN" (love the fireworks!) and a rockin’ rendition of the old hymn, "SOLID ROCK".

The DVD also features tons of extras including the songs "ALRIGHT" and "MY PASSION" from the main concert and an acoustic set, which features Denver sitting on the couch singing by candlelight in front of the audience. It’s this set that the "ACOUSTIC MEDLEY" comes from, as well as another tune that Denver penned for his wife titled, "MIRACLE TO ME." Other bonus features include some comic relief with Taylor Mason, bloopers from the concert, behind the scenes footage and an in-depth interview with Denver about the early days of the band, what they’re all about and the exciting things going with them now.

Although the CD is basically the audio version of the DVD with less talking, a few less songs and some condensed songs, they did a super job editing the product as it seamlessly flows through each song like one cohesive concert. The excitement rings though loud and clear on both the DVD and the CD and makes you feel like you are a part of the concert. The concert moves along very quickly and you’re so absorbed in what’s going on, it’s over before you know it. Full of crowd participation, energy and enthusiasm, this is more than just a recorded concert; it’s an experience that you won’t forget and everybody, no matter your musical taste, needs to do themselves a huge favor and experience Denver & The Mile High Orchestra. With over an hour and half of concert time on the DVD (plus all the DVD extras) edited down to right at one hour and ten minutes for the CD, this is a jam-packed package that you’re sure to enjoy to the hilt. Again I say…who knew Big Band could be so much fun?

Personal Favs: ONE TIME SHOW; THE REAL DEAL; CAN’T GET ENOUGH; ALL HAIL THE POWER; STAND; GET DOWN; SOLID ROCK

First of all, these guys are absolutely awesome!!!! Secondly, if you want to go to an entertaining live concert, these are the guys to see! They act crazy at times but it always puts a smile on your face. If you are a "traditional" fan of So. Gospel you probably won't like them that much. But if you are more progressive like me - than you will love Denver!!

sallyh's avatar Love DMHO! I've heard them in concert once, and for 2 years they opened Gaither's Praise Gathering. Let me tell you, that place was rockin by the time they left. Give them a try - you just might be very pleasantly surprised!
