Donnie & JD Together AgainProduced by Donnie Sumner

Label – Image Records

When you think that technology has gone too far, just stop and listen to the miracle of recording today as Donnie Sumner and his uncle, the legendary JD Sumner are brought together again to lift their voices together as they did for so many years with the Stamps Quartet.

Consisting of mostly classics and favorite old hymns, this CD will no doubt bring back special memories of JD. Especially touching are the recitations that JD always did with so much feeling. One of these great renditions is “The Master’s Hand”, the story of the auction of an old violin and the touch of the master’s hand.

Another song that will really get to your hearts strings is their rendition of “He Touched Me”. Donnie takes the lead on most of “I’ll Meet You By The River”, and he reminds us of why he was the Lead singer for the Stamps for so many years. JD sings “The Grand Homecoming Week” as though he was anxiously waiting for that week to happen.

There are a lot of very worshipful songs on this CD, but make sure that you have a hanky ready as JD recites “The Farmer and The Lord”. You had better keep that hanky handy as Donnie and JD combine on the tear-jerker rendition of “Steal Away”.

If you are a JD fan, or a fan of Bass singers, then this CD is a must.

I must say this recording sent cold chills down my spine. It's not the finest work I've heard by either of these gentlemen, but the entire concept and technical skills involved make it a treasure for those that love JD and Donnie.

I guess this is the gospel music equivilent of "Unforgettable" by Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole.

I was disappointed that there were no liner notes or comments about the production of the project. It would have been interesting to know when the project was recorded and some insight from Donnie about the technicalities of the project as well as the sentimental aspect of again singing with his uncle JD.

I heard Donnie Sumner about a month ago and he sang a couple of songs from this project, and also talked about it. He mentioned that after J.D.'s wife died, J.D. would come to Donnie's house for dinner many nights and after dinner they would go to Donnie's studio where Donnie would leave tape rolling and they would talk and sing for hours. He did all of this only because J.D. was his hero, never thinking of releasing anything from it. It wasn't until after J.D.'s death that he felt he had something he could work with. I'm looking forward to hearing it.
