I suppose you can call this my first attempt at reviewing a book. Books written about those and by those within the Southern Gospel industry can be quite fascinating in nature and you sometimes get to read things you normally wouldn’t read or hear about anywhere else; such as the case with “Driving Ms. Dottie”. (Love the title!)

This is Larry’s first attempt as a literary author; and he’s not a bad writer. I appreciate how well he sets everything up. Before you get into the meat of the book, Larry goes into his growing up years and really does a great job introducing himself and giving us a really good picture of his background and how he came to the point in his life that he is today. After the set up, get ready for a great ride as he tells some wonderful stories of traveling with Dottie Rambo these last several years. Some are lighthearted and hilarious, some are quite serious and sad and some have a great spiritual significance.

Larry shares many stories of meeting great stars like Loretta Lynn in the dentist office, taking Dottie to a backyard barbeque at Vince Gill and Amy Grant’s home, meeting and recording with Dolly Parton, meeting Joan Rivers as well as Lilly Tomlin, Carol Channing and so many others. Larry also shares many great stage and road stories. Larry also expounds on the great love between Dottie and Vestal Goodman, as well as with Tammy Faye Bakker.

Some may have the preconceived notion that this book would be uninteresting, and I will admit that at the very first I heard about the book, I thought if Larry is not careful, it could be. But as I started reading it, I could not put it down. It’s a great piece of history about one of Gospel Music’s true classics. But it’s more than just “about” Dottie Rambo and Larry Ferguson, it’s about life and the exciting times they have been able to share with one another and in turn, share with the world.
