Dustin and Kaila - The Journey Begins
Label: Independent
Producer: Jimmy Dooley
Dustin and Kaila are a fine duo from Wakarusa, Indiana. They sing a traditional Country Gospel style that I think you will enjoy.
Their producer, Jimmy Dooley, has contributed several songs to this project including the title song, “The Journey Begins”. This song is very commercial and would be a good single consideration. “He Went Searching” was also written by Jimmy and is a pretty ballad based on the story of the ninety and nine. This song features Dustin.
The duo splits the lead on the Southern Gospel classic, “Unclouded Day”. They add a little blues feel to this one. “He Did” features Kaila on a power ballad, another song from Jimmy Dooley. This song is sung well, well produced, and a highlight of the album.
Dustin and Kaila have chosen to include the Carroll McGruder classic, “I’m Going Home With Jesus”. As would be expected, the energy level picks up on this one; however, there were some pitchy spots in the vocals. “I Know” features Dustin on the vocals. This three quarter time song was written by Terry Wilkins and Greg Bentley.
“It Happened” is a happy little song from the pen of Ray Lewis. It was nice to hear the great Ray Overholt song, “Hallelujah Square”. There was probably not a bigger song during the 1970’s and it remains timeless.
“Sin’s the Sickness” is a pretty Country ballad written by Carol Goeller. The duo closes the c.d. out with a nice recording of Cleavant Derricks’ great song, “We’ll Soon Be Done”.
Overall, this was a good recording. Dustin has a pleasant Country Gospel style while Kaila is the power singer of the group. There were a few spots where I think that better diction would have helped with some of the pitchiness, but this project is definitely one that they can be proud of and use as a building block for future recordings.
