It’s been about 4 years since the Gann Brothers have released a new mainline recording, and it’s great to hear some new material from these guys. They have a good blend and an easygoing style, and they seem to be able to find songs that fit them very well.

The recording starts out with a new rendition of a quartet classic from the 1960s entitled, “I’LL LIVE IN GLORY”. Though done with a different flare than the way most people know it, I like it and appreciate how they managed to keep it fresh, while maintaining respect for song. Things slow down a bit for the nice flow of the prayerful, “QUIET TIME”, written by Sheldon Mencer.

Playing off the cliché “in the grip of grace”, the country flavor of the song “SAFE IN THE GRIP OF GRACE” reminds us that we are safe in the grip of God’s grace before moving on to the ballad, “THERE IS POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS”, which was also recently recorded by the Mike Bowling Group. Both of these tunes were penned in part by Jeff Ferguson.

Filled with lots of fiddle action, “ONLY HERE FOR A LITTLE WHILE” is a song worth remembering. Before the song is over you’ll be singing along, “Gonna hold what needs holding, mend what needs mending, walk what needs walking, thought it means an extra mile, pray what needs praying, say what needs saying, ‘cause we’re only here for a little while.” Though the salvation plan isn’t exactly given in the song, it’s got some great advice for us to focus on the things and people that really matter in life, plus it’s just a fun song.

Penned by Milton “Big Mo” Ostrander and recorded by the Hoppers almost 25 years ago, the Gann Brothers turn in their own version of “THE RIVER OF LOVE”, before moving on to the upbeat, “STARTED IN A MANGER”, which combines the Christmas and Easter stories and provides a great hook, “What He started in a manger, He finished on a hill.”

Lead singer, Kyle Peddie writes and sings the story-song, “SO GLAD WE MADE IT” before things move on to the title song, “IMAGINE”, penned by Phil Gann. With a simple beginning, the song builds to a climactic ending and is the definitive highlight and triumph of the recording and could really do well for the group on radio.

Before closing out the recording, we come to the ever-so-slight southern rock feel of “HUNGRY ARE FED”, written by Calvin Gann, and a simple rendition of the CCM classic, “BECAUSE OF WHO YOU ARE”.

The Gann Brothers are a good group, with a good sound. They don’t have a lot of vocal variety, but I like them. The Gann Brothers do a great job mixing Country Gospel with a hint of Contemporary, all the while maintaining a good Southern Gospel base sound that is pleasing to the ear. Probably my biggest gripe with this particular recording is the overall quality. The CD sounds as if it was mixed a bit too hot, and there is some slight distortion throughout the recording, which is the main reason for my rating. I would have also liked to see a bit more creativity given to the cover as well. Overall though, vocals, tracks and song selection are quite good and makes for a good, solid piece of work for the guys.
