Label: Morning Star Records
Produced by: Eddie Crook

Gina Marie greets you on the cover of her CD with a beautiful smile, but the first cut, “Fly Away” is not quite as pleasant. Unfortunately pitch issues get Gina started off on the wrong foot. “Only If It Pleases You” seems to be a bit better, and I finally get a sense of Gina’s strong soprano tone. “That Feeling,” the third song, has a great melody and is Gina’s best performance so far. Until the title cut, “There’s Still a Cross” which is in a similar vein and seems to fit her vocal the best. This is probably Gina’s best choice for radio.

Things pick up with “Take the First Step.” The instrumentation on this one is especially enjoyable. Obviously ballads are her strong suit. She seems to have some timing issues and an overall lack of energy on a few of the up-tempo things. “Everything I Am" and "He’s Still the Same” are both medium tempo songs and she does just fine on them. “Nothing Shall Separate Us,” another ballad is strong lyrically, but the background vocals were a little strange on this one. “It’s Alright” follows suit. I’m not sure if the BGV’s are just singing along unison or if Gina’s stacks are sloppy, but either way, it’s not the most flattering sound. The project finishes on the RIGHT note with “Jesus Hold My Hand,” and I’m thankful for this song being the last impression of Gina. It was much better than her first.

As harsh as this review may sound, I actually did like Gina Marie’s voice. She has a very nice tone and on the ballads she really ministers what she’s singing. The pitch problems were unfortunate. Reading her remarks on the inside of her CD, you can tell she has had vocal training from some from of the most respected talent in the industry, including Joyce Martin, Steve Hurst and The Talley Trio. It makes me wonder if her difficulty in pitch had more to do with poor production or perhaps a headphone malfunction in the studio. Maybe I’ll have a chance to hear Gina live sometime to determine if this is true or not.
