There is no denying the amazing success that the group Greater Vision has continued to have over the past decade. The group was catapulted to "star" status with the release of "My Name Is Lazarus" from Far Beyond This Place. That album spawned off even more hit songs, and the group continued to release hit album after hit album.
This award-winning trio is back with Everyday People - an album with a much more stripped down sound than their last few records. Gone are the grand orchestrations and intricate vocal arrangements. Though all the bells and whistles are missing this time around, one can't but be intrigued by just how great this group is even in the stripped down approach. Your ears are still drawn in to the group's blend, but rather than hearing the all the clutter of over-production, one can focus on just how great these songs are.
Everyday People features eight songs written by Rodney Griffin, including the lead single "It Means Just What It Says." Songs like "God Will Pass By", "Peace Like a River", "Above & Beyond", and "As I Am" feature traditional Southern Gospel at it's finest - showcasing the power of the lyric - while at the same time treating the listener to some fine vocal moments as well.
The album features many radio-friendly numbers, like "Plain Ol' Everyday People", "As I Am", and "The First & The Last". While at the same time, numbers that will translate well in a live setting for more ministry minded moments are also included, like "You Can" and their cover of the Dottie Rambo classics "Too Much to Gain to Lose" and "I Just Came to Talk With You Lord."
Overall, Everyday People ends up being one of the most charming releases to come out this year from a major group. They've taken away the grand strings and orchestrations have replaced them with typical Southern Gospel arrangements with plenty of steel guitar thrown in for good measure. It's not over-produced, over-stacked, or over-processed. Instead, it shows that Greater Vision is just a group of "everyday people", and they wear title proudly.
