Producer: John Lanier

This recording highlights some of the best loved and most requested songs spanning the first decade of music from one of Southern Gospel's favorite male vocalists, John Lanier. With a very detailed history in gospel music, ( that you can read here ), Lanier has proven himself to be a very viable part of Southern Gospel Music. Spanning the course of his first 5 solo recordings, we are treated with a walk backwards in time as we listen starting from his 1999 release, “Lord, Let Me Leave a Song” down to the end with his very first recording from 1989, “He Gave Me Music.” (It's kind of interesting hearing a couple of songs from that first recording). I was pleased to see pretty much all of my favorite John Lanier songs here on one CD…with one exception, “Angel's Camping All Around Me.” John somehow left that song off. Oh well, I can't have them all!

Starting the CD are songs from his tribute to Naomi Sego. Those songs, “LORD LET ME LEAVE A SONG”, “JUST LIKE YOU”, “I WENT DOWN A BEGGAR”, “WHERE THE ROSES NEVER FADE” and “ HALLELUJAH SQUARE ” are some of John's best performances in my opinion. As the CD moves on, we come to three songs from the recording “SECOND TIME AROUND.” Including the title song, “THE GOD I SERVE” and “ALWAYS THERE FOR ME” are included in this collection. What I consider to be one of John's signature songs, “FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES” as well as “THIS IS JUST WHAT HEAVEN MEANS TO ME” (One of my absolute favorite songs John does) , “THE BLOOD IS STILL STRONG ENOUGH” and “JERUSALEM” are from his “Discover the Joy” recording.

Back before John joined Tony Gore & Majesty, he recorded an album called “Right Here Waiting” which included several duets with his sister, Angela. Several of those songs are found here including, “HOLY SPIRIT COME DOWN”, “HE CARES FOR YOU”, “ONLY THE HOLY SHALL ENTER IN”, “TWO MORE HANDS”, “ALMOST HOME” and “HE NEVER LEFT ME”. Rounding out this collection are two songs from John's rarely heard first recording. Granted, the quality of that recording is quite a bit less than adequate, it is still neat to hear a bit of history as John sings “LITTLE DAVID” and “HE'LL FIND A WAY”.

Fans of John Lanier will absolutely have to get this CD. One thing that would have really been neat is a bit of written history on John Lanier with the CD. But other than that, this is a great collection of songs and one that will definitely be kept near my CD player.

Having enjoyed John's music for many years, I agree with your review, James...there are some of John's best songs on this recording. I was hoping to see "Wind Beneath My Wings" from the first album, but I guess it didn't make the cut. John's professionalism and love for the Lord shine through equally, and the songs never leave you wondering where his faith lies. Good collection of some of his best songs!
