Rusty Goodman is arguably one of the greatest singers and vocal stylists to ever sing a song, period. It's uncanny how similar Kevin Spencer sounds like Rusty Goodman. There is a slight country twang in Kevin's tone which stops him just short of sounding exactly like Rusty, and Rusty had such a broad range that he is unmatched as a vocalist, in my opinion. In reality, there aren't too many people who could have pulled off this recording, and Kevin is one of the few and the proud. You can tell that much time, energy and passion went into the making of this recording so it would all come out just right.

Kevin does an outstanding job with some truly classic Rusty Goodman tunes like "LEAVIN' ON MY MIND", "WHO AM I", "I WOULDN'T TAKE NOTHING FOR MY JOURNEY NOW" and "LOOK FOR ME" (Kevin is joined by Tanya Goodman-Sykes on the latter two songs). He also does a great tribute, which Rusty wrote several years ago, called "FAMILY BAND". Though Rusty wrote it from a personal point of view, Kevin takes it and sings it as a story song about Rusty and the Happy Goodman Family.

I was thrilled to see "YOU MAKE IT RAIN FOR ME" (one of my all time favorite Rusty tunes) and "HE CHOSE ME" (a truly great Mosie Lister song) and was also glad to see "HEADIN' HOME" (an all but forgotten Rusty tune from the early 1980s) included as well. Those are some of the more obscure tunes that don't automatically get named when listing great Rusty Goodman songs.

Kevin did an outstanding job paying tribute to his musical hero. He allowed himself a bit of personal creativity with each song and didn't follow their original tunes exactly note for note, but he didn't wander too far either.

Since this was titled as Volume 1, I am anticipating another volume of favored Rusty Goodman tunes like maybe "How Much More", "Don't Let me See", "Jesus Knows All About It", "It Must Have Rained in Heaven", "Had it not Been", "Handshakes & Smiles", or maybe even "Guilty of Love" or "The Greatest Love Story". Nonetheless, with Volume 1, Kevin pays a wonderful tribute to a truly great singer and songwriter who should never be forgotten.
