McCunes - “Blessings”
Hailing from the state of Missouri is a relatively new female trio called, the McCunes. Consisting of 3 sisters; Teresa, Toni and Micki, these ladies really show off some nice harmonies and have a nice, toned down sound that is easy to listen to. I could try to compare them to other female groups like the Ruppes, Rejoice, Perry Sisters or Third Promise, but these ladies really have a sound that is their own. Though in some ways they still have, for lack of better words, a local church group sound, they emanate a lot of potential. The folksy sounding “DON’T LOOK BACK” gets things started, while the jazzy “ENJOY YOUR DAY” makes me think of the Lanny Wolfe classic from the late 70s called “Have a Nice Day with Jesus.” I really like this song and it really taps into what these ladies can do. They recorded a couple of well known tunes including “LOOK WHAT I’VE TRADED FOR A MANSION” and the Rusty Goodman classic, “WAIT’LL YOU SEE MY BRAND NEW HOME.” Rendering a very smooth performance on the Cathedrals classic, “THANKS FOR LOVING ME” is a definite highlight of the recording. Master songwriter Joel Lindsey contributed the country sounding, “COME A STRANGER, LEAVE A FRIEND.” This encouraging song invites those who are strangers to the gospel, that they are welcome and that the Father will take you in and invites you to “take a place around the table.” The up tempo “HE’S HOLDING ON TO ME” reminds us that it is not by our own strength we’re made more than conquerors, for as the song states, “I’m not holding on to Jesus, He’s holding on to me.” The McCunes are also harboring a blossoming songwriter as Teresa penned the insightful, “I’M HIS CHILD.” With a slight Cajun sound, “IF YOU THINK I’M EXCITED” is a song you’ll be singing over and over again. The highly enjoyable “I’M SAVED” will have you hitting the repeat button several times. Made popular by the Greenes over a dozen years ago, the McCunes do a superb job on this song and I think it would be an excellent choice as a single. The cover of the CD can be somewhat misleading, as it is only the 3 sisters that are singing. But the cover shows a family picture of mom, dad along with the 3 sisters with their spouses and children. This CD is a really good introduction to the music of the McCunes.
