A name that is synonymous with traditional male quartet music is the Melody Masters Quartet. Consisting of Scott Whitener, Chris Roberts, Richard Sanders and Roger Burnett, the group seems to have the ability to step out of the more traditional mold and tackle some of the progressive sounds and on this latest recording aptly titled, "Big Change" , the group continues that trend as there are plenty of the more traditional sounds, as well as plenty of the more progressive movements.

Starting off with a few bars of the time honored favorite, "Time Has Made a Change", the tempo and mood quickly changes as the group breaks into the fun modern quartet sounds of the John Darin Rowsey penned tune, "BIG CHANGE". The atmosphere quickly changes to a more serious vein as the group reminds us that there is nothing that can be done to bring us this great salvation, "SAVE IN THE CROSS". Featuring tenor, Chris Roberts, this is probably the biggest highlight for me on the whole recording.

Penned by McCray Dove, "YES I KNOW (EVERYTHING'S ALRIGHT)" is a perfect traditional quartet song, while "CALL JESUS" offers a bit more of a progressive edge to it. Chris Roberts turns in an excellent instrumental on the trumpet and piano on the hymn "'TIS SO SWEET" before the rockabilly sounds of "TAKE IT TO JESUS" take over. Baritone vocalist, Roger Burnett sings, "TAKE UP YOUR CROSS" before Scott Whitener delivers a little "HEAVEN ON EARTH."

The soothing sound and message of "WHEN HE SPEAKS TO ME" will no doubt be a favorite of many on this recording, including myself. Featuring bass vocalist Richard Sanders, I love the simplicity of the song and the warmth of his delivery. (He reminds me a lot of Paul Downing on this song). The recording ends on a fast tempo with the oft-recorded favorite "GET UP IN JESUS' NAME".

In my opinion, MMQ does a good job mixing the more progressive quartet styles with the more traditional, and they seem to have made it work for them. The overall quality of the recording is quite good, though at times it sounds like the group is singing in a barrel. The song selection is good, the music tracks are super and the vocals are very well done. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this recording.

Personal Favs: SAVE IN THE CROSS; YES I KNOW (EVERYTHING'S ALRIGHT); ‘TIS SO SWEET; TAKE IT TO JESUS; WHEN HE SPEAKS TO ME

"When He Speaks To Me" has become one of my favorite cuts on this CD. It wasn't really attention grabbing at first, probably because it's a slower song, but it's a song I've liked a little bit more each time I've heard it.
