Mercy River - Have Faith
Producer: Gene McDonald From Jackson, Mississippi comes a group called Mercy River and "Have Faith" is my very first introduction to their music, and I must say that I'm impressed. From the first notes of the medium tempo "NO ONE LIKE YOU", you know you are listening to solid quartet music. Consisting of Tenor, Chad Savage, Lead singer, Buddy Graves, Jon Charles Taggart on Baritone, and Butch Owens singing Bass (who is a very good bass, I might add). The lead singer reminds me somewhat of Legacy 5 lead vocalist, Scott Fowler, with the exception that Buddy has a bit more depth to his voice. Overall, the quartet boasts a classy sound. Classic tunes like "WHEN GOD DIPS HIS PEN OF LOVE", "LORD, LEAD ME HOME", "I WENT TO AN OLD CAMPMEETING WITH THE DEVIL" and "CHEER THE WEARY TRAVELER" (I can hear Signature Sound Quartet doing this song) all get excellent treatment from the group as they sing these songs very well. Other songs like "LOOK UP", "I BELIEVE", "GRIP OF HIS GRACE", "HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE" and "HAVE FAITH" all showcase the group with varying tempos and portrays the group as a solid sounding quartet. Ending the recording is an almost comical spiritual acapella song called "SHUT DE DO" (Shut the Door) and they perform this song like pros. The CD graphics are very plain and ordinary but the songs are very good, the vocals are excellent, and the tracks are decent. At times though, the orchestrations are mediocre, but the overall quality of the recording is very good. Their sound is kind of a mix between the Kingsmen, Florida Boys and Dixie Echoes. There aren't any massive arrangements on this recording simply because the group just is not a flashy group. They are very solid and they blend very well and it makes for excellent listening. If you're on the lookout for high quality up and coming quartets, look no further than Mercy River.
