I will be the very first to admit that I am not a huge fan of Praise & Worship music. It’s just a matter of personal taste and musical preference. While I understand what it is and the meaning behind, I still tend to find it very boring. I mean, how many ways can we tell the Lord how holy he is, how awesome he is, how much we love him, etc. Worship and Praise is a personal thing with me, and not something I enjoy listening to as a musical genre. But be that as it may, I really found this first offering from Buddy & Kerri Mullins, Donny Henderson and Channing Eleton, collectively known as Second Mile, to be quite diversified for Praise & Worship music, and I found myself being ushered in to worship many times.

Musically and lyrically, there is a good variety found here and the lyrics go much deeper than just repetitive lines and holy, glory, worthy, etc. There are songs about the cross, the blood, forgiveness, submission, salvation, grace, mercy, etc. Hearing this recording makes me very excited about the music of Second Mile and what is yet to come for these guys.

The progressive country feel of "DON’T LET ME MISS THE GLORY", which features an excellent performance by Buddy Mullins (it’s so great hearing him sing again…what an awesome talent!) starts the recording off and from the start, you know you’re listening to something special, before the highly energetic, "CHILDREN OF GOD", featuring Donny, really makes you perk up before Buddy’s wife, Kerri turns in a tender performance as she sings the worshipful tune simply titled, "THE NAME".

Buddy picks up the pace again with "I WILL DO THE SAME", before Donny takes the lead on the powerful song, "LEAD YOU TO THE CROSS". The soulful, "THE POWER AND THE GLORY" features a vast array of vocalists including Mike Bowling, Reggie & Ladye Smith, Ron Hemby and others before Kerri kicks it back into high gear with the jubilant, "SOMEBODY DANCE".

A tremendous song of thankfulness about the forgiveness of God, is the guitar infested tune, "MY FORGIVENESS", which features Buddy while "KING OF MY WORLD", featuring Donny, is another guitar infested tune that leads very well into the worshipful, "DRAW NEAR".

With it’s mandolin intro, Kerri sings the upbeat, "ALWAYS", while Buddy kicks it back up several notches with a couple of hard driving tunes, "WHATEVER IT TAKES" and "ADORATION".

With it’s simple arrangement with just piano and accordion, you can’t help but be ushered in to unadulterated worship with the beautiful, "SHELTER ME" before the recording closes out with a song that has done well in the CCM market by Todd Agnew titled, "GRACE LIKE RAIN". The group doesn’t venture too far from the original arrangement, but do manage to make it their own.

While not exactly Southern Gospel, there are moments where their roots shine through. If you’re strictly traditional, then you probably will not enjoy this recording. Aside from them wearing traditional look alike suits on the cover, that is where "traditional" pretty much stops! But if you like P&W music, or like a more progressive edge to your music, then Second Mile is a group to take a chance on and give a listen to. They’re musically edgy and lyrically sound. What more can ask for?

Personal Favs: DON’T LET ME MISS THE GLORY; CHILDREN OF GOD; LEAD YOU TO THE CROSS; MY FORGIVENESS; DRAW NEAR; SHELTER ME; GRACE LIKE RAIN

I have had this project for a couple of weeks and have become very familiar with the singers and the songs. I would not consider this a "P&W" album. The songs do have more of a "vertical" approach in terms of the lyrics but the performances are very much CCM. (in my opinion). This project will be right at home next to Mercy Me, Casting Crowns, Avalon, and groups of this nature. To be truthful, I am a bit confused as to why Vertical would be reviewed here, other than the group members' history with the Southern Gospel market.

Even though they've only been together for a short time, I'm already a huge fan. I got the record in the mail a few days ago and all I can say is WOW! My favorite songs on the record is definitely Lead You To The Cross and Don't Let Me Miss The Glory. I thought it was so cool how you think the CD ends as you hear the last notes of Grace Like Rain. Then all of the sudden, it goes back into it with an all-out-jam that absolutely rocks! This CD is great!

I don't see how it is possible to tell Jesus how holy he is too much! Never gets old to me.
