Nashville, TN- John Hughey, pedal steel guitar great, passed away Sunday November 18, 2007. He was the longtime steel guitarist for Conway Twitty, known for his "crying" steel guitar style. He later joined the Vince Gill band, playing on many recordings, including the popular song "Look At Us".

Mr Hughey played on many southern gospel albums including The Original Hinsons, Mike Bowling, Tony Gore and The Happy Goodmans. He played the marvelous intro to "What a Beautiful Day, For the Lord to Come Again" for the Goodmans and so many others.

He was a friend to many and will be sorely missed in Southern and Country Gospel Music. His beautiful wife Jean survives him. Please remember her and their family in the tough days ahead.

James Hales's avatar What a musical legend he is. His music will still be heard long after he is gone.

He and Sonny Garrish are my favorite steel guitar players. Both are masters of their craft.

I remember Vestal saying that hearing John Hughey play made he want to sing. Can't beat a compliment like that!

I have long admired John Hughey for His Steele playing. We always listened to the steel on songs, to guess who was playing, I could always catch his sound. He will be missed and not replaced in my book.

Vestal Goodman was right about Johnny Hughey, he was the best of all time guitar players, he will be missed.

The Lord gave John a talent to talk to us with the steel guitar, he will truly be missed but his music will live on thru his recordings and dvd with the time jumpers. I am sad that John has left us but I am also happy as he enters his new home with the Lord to join the many that have gone before us. John, Hank and Porter will be pickin and singing forever with the many greats that are already there. God Bless to his wife Jean and family until we all meet again with the Lord Jesus Christ
